Ciclo di seminari “Soviet Modernisms. Stories of Appropriation and Engagement”
The cycle of seminars “Soviet Modernisms. Stories of Appropriation and Engagement” focuses on Modern Architecture in different republics of the former Soviet Union. Through a series of meetings dedicated to different post-Soviet countries the evolution, typology, cultural and climatic specificities of this heritage have been explored, together with its perception and management in the post-Soviet time and in today’s world.
The last session of our seminar is dedicated to Kiev, capital of Ukraine. We will discuss the specific history of Ukrainian modernism, as well as its fate after the fall of the Soviet Union. Special attention will be paid to the current war situation and to the activities of Ukrainian scholars and other social actors who are aiming to protect Modern Architecture.
Our invited lecturer, Ievgeniia Gubkina, is an Ukrainian architectural historian currently living in London. She is particularly known for her book “Soviet Modernism. Brutalism. Post-Modernism. Buildings and Structures in Ukraine 1955–1991”. Since 2014, she is the co-founder and deputy head of the NGO Urban Forms Center, Kharkiv, Ukraine.
