The seminar presents contemporary approaches to the design of the building envelope in addressing the relation between inside and outside, artifice and context, built and natural environments. Centering on a selection of projects, from new construction to modification, it addresses the envelope as an integral part of the design project, exploring new connections between form and performance, space and structure, materiality and perception. It examines the evolving character of the envelope in re-assessment of the modernist tradition, and of issues transparency, lightness, and adaptability.
