The concept of landscape is often linked to values of beauty, health, and well-being. However, many visually appealing aspects of landscapes can mask ecological and environmental problems, leading to a disconnect between our perception of landscapes and the reality of their environmental impact. For example, some of Italy’s most beautiful beaches have stunningly colored water but are off-limits for swimming, and the spectacular sunsets in the Po Valley are intensified by air pollution.
In this context, Philippe Rahm’s critical design and theoretical contribution is an essential reference, as he incorporates ecology as an element in the project’s construction, rather than as a cause or consequence of architectural choices. His most recent research on the air theme is provocative and exciting from the perspective of design and reflection on the discipline. In a recent statement in Vesper, he suggested that ‘the architect must design climates, rather than geometrical shapes.
