The Corners studio presents a showcase of the final work from the first year Architectural Design Studio. The studio posits the form of the city as a unique and singular result from the encounter of multiple urban densities and forms, with corners representing the form where these encounters takes place. With the project sites based in Brussels, the compacity and the porosity of the historical and modernist city address each other in particular moments where open space is shaped in relationship with existing architectural forms. The course posed the question “what is the form of density?”, which students responded to through a formal singularity of the project of urban corners or triangles in strategic places where the overlap of these various aspects occur in diverse and complex ways. The goal is to establish a mutual link between the urban and architectural form and the metropolitan need for a mixed use complex. The final projects derive from extensively studying exemplars of Beautiful Corners, investigating the urban form of the city and deriving approaches based on a theoretical reading of the site.
