Towards an international research program and a local laboratory. Cases and approaches.
The seminar explores and discusses the theme of urban space regeneration starting from the recent activation of emerging territorial communities in different urban contexts such as Aveiro (Portugal) and Dergano-Bovisa in Milan (Italy), followed by other international contexts. The occasion aims to reflect on the forms, the role and the outcomes of the activities promoted by communities of practices that share purposes and capacity to transform public spaces in the city, create products and services improving the relational value of the territory, acting as a design-oriented community.
The cases deal with topics such as the construction of shared knowledge, the identification of intermediate forms of organisation and management, the quest for adequate urban planning tools, and the content of projects and policies conducted at the neighbourhood’s scale. Against the background of the projects proposed by the communities, environmental sustainability and ecological transition stand out, as well as inclusiveness and attention to socio-spatial fragility. These are central themes for European policies and international funding lines as well, which the seminar will resonate with the cases.
The seminar is part of a broader research program that starts with the present discussion between researchers and continues with a remote dialogue between two communities (Aveiro and Milan) in September 2022. The research program is shared with the University of Aveiro.
