Notes on a Milanese periphery
Photographer Marco Merati presents his project “Bovisa or nowhere”, a journey through images and thoughts that expands the definitions of Environmental Design and Metabolism of City and Landscape by linking them to an emotional physical place.
The industrial and popular landscape of Bovisa, its inhabitants and workers, its factories, gasometers, and courtyard houses have been a source of great inspiration for artists of all disciplines. The popular district told by Ermanno Olmi and Giovanni Testori, loved by Luchino Visconti and Le Corbusier, photographed by Gabriele Basilico and Francesco Radino, imagined by the visionary genius of John Hejduk and by the painter Mario Sironi, who precisely portrayed those factories as symbols of culture of the work and workers’ struggles. Bovisa is a corner of Milan that offers surprising urban contrasts, a unique city landscape, in continuous transformation. A territory suspended between memory and redemption, poised between past and future, where time seems to flow in a circular way. A place dotted with non-places. Merati’s project crystallizes the urban transformations of a Milanese district through photographic research of places and symbols, which we consume daily without however grasping their social essence and historical value. A journey into everyday life, in a labyrinth of warehouses, fences, grandiose industrial archeology artifacts bordering modern architecture, gates closed on the void, silent sheds.Relatore: Marco Merati
