Can Architecture and Urban Design be Critical?
Since the special issue of Architectural Review in July/August 2020, there has been little debate about the de-politicisation of tools and the critical role of architecture and urban design.
The architectural and urban design processes themselves neglect the exploited transcalar environment in which the built space exists and is used. How can these places be understood in the architecture that frames them and by including the care of the broader ecological sphere and the socio-political urban arenas? In the Research Thematic Seminar “Contemporary Cities: Geographies, Practices, Socio-Spatial Patterns” – Master Degree in Architecture and Urban Design (Profs. Simonetta Armondi and Gabriele Pasqui) – we meet with two members of Hyperscapes Research Office, an interdisciplinary open-ended working group of creators to discuss contemporary issues concerning the research and critical approaches to space in design and architecture. HRO was established in 2020 and, from the beginning, engaged in research on complex topics such as urban political ecology, refugees and planetary urbanization in the Anthropocene, and their mapping and connection to architecture and urban planning.Relatore: Diogo Ferreira, Kostantinos Venis – Hyperscapes Research Office
