Architectures of Financialization
16/04/2024, h. 10:00 – 12:30
Politecnico di Milano, Campus Leonardo, Edificio 14, Aula Scuola di Specializzazione in Beni Architettonici e del Paesaggio
Sara Stevens and Matthew Soules will jointly present their latest individual work on the relationship between real estate, financialization, and architecture.
Sara will focus on neoliberalization and speculation in the development of Canary Wharf in London in the 1980s. She will argue that financialization rewrote the terms of architectural practice amid the deregulation of financial markets.
Matthew will examine emergent trends in the financialization of architecture including questions of formal liquidity, the expanding scope and scale of Property Technology, and the entrenchment of the politics of crisis.
Together, their scholarship undergirds their efforts with the activist organization Architects Against Housing Alienation, the official representation of Canada at the 2023 Venice Biennale of Architecture.
The seminar is organized by Luca Gaeta and Federico Zanfi within the PhD program in Urban Planning, Design and Policy at DAStU.
