The definition. The Metropolitan concept is related to a measure and a scale which are not associated to human dimensions, or commensurate with the urban fabric and the density parameters /index of urban concentration, represented in the concept of proximity. Metropolitan as a category is related to a context of mass mobility of people and goods, which implies a different relationship between individuals and groups. The technological utopia has erased previous geographical traces and has disarticulated agricultural and urban historical topological patches. The old urban typo-morphological structure, whose functioning was mostly centripetal, suffers from congestion and lack of efficiency. The concept of Paesaggio has to be integrated by some issues from the Urban Landscape discipline.
Metropolitan works therefore as an alternative, intense urban form and environment, where new atopic proximities (meta-city, G.Shane) are produced and a convenient bridge to the abstract and invisible world of the informational and networked city is provided (contents for the new technologies/new maps).
The question. How can university research support a capacity building process and help to built a social capital awareness? Our research field of action is the METROPOLITAN CITY and our tool is the METROPOLITAN ARCHITECTURE: a new discipline. Nevertheless, incommensurability emerges as one of the main argument, also in relation to a new sensitivity toward the natural and local ground, and with concern of new styles of behaviour induced by virtual communications in real time.
THE GOAL We investigate ways and strategies to adapt and reform the typological and morphological paradigms of architecture and urban design to the transformation of contemporary urban territories.
THE KEY ISSUES. Mapping _ Inter-scalar readings, from geography to semiology: from the satellite interpretation to the morph-typological context maps; Beyond Planning _ Metropolitan spatial strategic frameworks; Metropolitan Architecture _ New built form types for a civic robustness and formality gradient patterns; Education and knowledge transfer projects: workshops, master courses, MBA.
