How are the territories of production, exchange and support of large concentrations and dispersions changing in regional urbanisation as a result of recent global crises? How do trace their geographies, spatial strategies, actors and powers emerging in a framework of accelerated planning and increasing complexity? It is from these questions that this seminar moves – against the backdrop of the RIBA project 2021 “I paesaggi operazionali del Nord Italia” – into a broader panorama of critical reflection that takes on the urban question as a matter of networks, powers and scales. In the pervasive planetarization and regionalization of the urban, the international seminar introduces an exploration of certain territories (production platforms manufacturing, logistics hubs and networks, and infrastructures) that are not typically ‘urban’ or even peripheral, specialised, infrastructure-dense and industrially intensive, with extensive material, operational and information links, with a precise ‘service’ character to the sustenance of the urban whose declinations, are all to be understood. With an interdisciplinary approach, which brings together policies, planning and spatial strategies the seminar presents a timely critical reading of selected operational geographies in different countries.
