From Borda and Condorcet to Arrow’s theorem. Trade-offs and power indices
Seminar Series “Decision Aiding for Policy Design and Evaluation”
In this talk we focus upon the preference aggregation problem: supposing having a set of preference relations applied upon a given set A, how these can be aggregated to a single overall binary relation? Which properties can be satisfied and which are the ones we want to be satisfied? Under which conditions such an aggregated preference relation has a numerical presentation? We introduce the archetypes of the Borda and Condorcet preference aggregation procedures and we show Arrow’s impossibility theorem. We then show why second order preference relations are not primitives and how can be constructed out of multi-attribute preference profiles.
