Open Lectures Series

The Honours Programme – City Science for Transformative Urban Futures opens with a lecture by Vanesa Castán Broto, Professor of Climate Urbanism at the Urban Institute, University of Sheffield.

Her research explores the governance of climate change in cities, examining how urban actors, institutions and knowledge systems shape responses to global environmental change. Bridging urban studies, climate policy and development studies, her work highlights the role of cities in advancing climate transitions and more inclusive urban futures.

Professor Castán Broto has authored and co-edited numerous books and articles, including Inclusive Urban Development in the Global South (Routledge, 2021) and Climate Urbanism (Palgrave, 2021).
Her work has been widely recognised, including the AXA Prize in Climate Science (2021) and the Philip Leverhulme Prize in Geography (2016).
In 2013, a project she led received the UNFCCC Lighthouse Activity Award for initiatives improving the living conditions of the urban poor.

In this lecture she will reflect on the political and institutional dimensions of urban climate action in an age of planetary urbanization, offering both a conceptual framework and practical insights on how to activate urban transformations and deliver climate action in practice.

The lecture inaugurates the 2026 edition of the CRAFT Honours Programme and opens a series of public lectures organised within the programme and open to the wider academic community.

Speaker: Vanesa Castan Broto, Professor of Climate Urbanism at the Urban Institute, University of Sheffield.
