While it may continue to receive varying perspectives on ethics and social ideologies, “reality tours” opens an urban discourse that can generate multiple interpretations in relation to a realistic space between the developed and developing cities.
The presentation addresses underpinning processes behind the experiential initiative that bear spatial injustices, narratives of imposed authenticities, exposition of informality for political agenda and at the same time, derive arguable evidences that lead to urban upgrading including socioeconomic development and community empowerment.
The qualitative research, conducted through multiple data gathering, interviews and ethnographic fieldwork, explores realities found in four impoverished communities where “reality tours” is practiced, particularly the most famous favela Rocinha in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the largest slum Dharavi in Mumbai, India, the port area slum of BASECO in Manila, Philippines and the once isolated now revived district of Rione Sanità in Napoli, Italy.
