Chiffi Daniele
Associate Professor
I am Associate Professor of Logic and Philosophy of Science at Politecnico di Milano, in the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies (DAStU). I am also a member of META-Polimi – Social Sciences and Humanities for Science and Technology.
My research explores reasoning and decision-making under uncertainty, drawing on the philosophy of science and technology, formal epistemology, and the philosophy of logic. I focus particularly on the philosophy of risk and the philosophy of medicine, as well as the philosophy of the city. Across these areas, I examine the relationship between normativity and uncertainty and the ethical dimensions of science and technology.
I am the author of Philosophy of Risk (with M. Andreoletti, Cambridge University Press, 2026), Uncertainty, Innovation and the City: Philosophical Explorations (with S. Moroni, Edward Elgar, 2025), and Clinical Reasoning: Knowledge, Uncertainty and Values in Health Care (Springer, 2021). I have also co-edited Fragility and Antifragility in Cities and Regions (with F. Curci, Edward Elgar, 2024) and Risk and Resilience: Socio-Spatial and Environmental Challenges (with A. Balducci and F. Curci, Springer, 2020).
Within the PNRR project RETURN – Multi-Risk Science for Resilient Communities Under a Changing Climate, I have conducted and supervised interdisciplinary research on the epistemology and ethics of natural risks.
I serve as Associate Editor of Science and Engineering Ethics (Springer) and as a member of the Advisory Boards of The Journal of Medicine and Philosophy (Oxford University Press) and the book series Studies in Applied Philosophy, Epistemology and Rational Ethics (SAPERE, Springer). I have guest-edited special issues of several international journals. I am currently co-editing, with M. Ongaro, G. Zanotti and P. Janda, the topical collection Philosophy of Risk: Beliefs, Values, and Decisions for the journal Synthese.
I hold the Italian National Scientific Qualification as Full Professor in Logic, History, and Philosophy of Science.
At Politecnico di Milano, I am a member of the Research Ethics Committee and of the Human Resources Strategy for Researchers (HRS4R) Steering Committee, which provides strategic guidance on the University’s implementation of the European Charter for Researchers.
