Rethinking Urban Transformation, or How a New Urban Order Emerges

Research Seminar

The seminar will address the emergence of new urban orders within the urban environment. Each transformation of the city seeks to establish an order that reflects the prevailing values and needs of its time. The implementation of a project or idea at a specific urban location inevitably produces consequences for the surrounding areas. Such interventions may either enhance the attractiveness of adjacent territories, thereby stimulating their development, or, conversely, contribute to stagnation. Anticipating the outcomes of implementing new ideas in the urban fabric requires a deeper understanding of the mechanisms of interaction among elements of the urban system. The seminar will present a mathematical model that describes the parametric interactions among components of the urban system and will demonstrate the results of computer-based simulations, which provide an opportunity to test hypotheses concerning the mechanisms of urban transformation.
