Common Ground // New Commons
Reimagining mountain habitats for collective futures

The conference marks the concluding event of the PRIN 2022 research project “Governance for a Reticular Mountain: Co-design and ‘Contratto d’Abitare’ as Tools for the Territorial Regeneration in Seriana Valley” (founded by MUR – Ministero dell'Università e della Ricerca).
The conference aims to build a multidisciplinary panel of speakers, bringing together perspectives from history, law, economics, architecture, and design. Its objective is to open a shared reflection on the concept of the commons, understood as dynamic practices of production, care, and shared management of collective resources and spaces, both material and immaterial.
At the core of the discussion lies the process of commoning — the act of making and maintaining in common — which emphasizes collective action, negotiation, and cooperation among individuals and communities. These practices are particularly relevant in rural and mountain contexts, where they can strengthen solidarity networks, promote new social contracts, and contribute to redefining both individual and collective rights. In mountain territories, in particular, the commons provide a crucial framework for activating and sustaining resilient communities, regenerating places, and maintaining the balance between human and ecological systems.
