Juliette Bekkering and Michiel Riedijk will give two main public lectures during the ASA Masterclass, on Monday 08.07.24 at 17.00h regarding ‘Architecture and Nature’ and on Tuesday 09.07.24 at 17.00h regarding the pivotal projects of the well known office ‘Neutelings Riedijk Architects’
The ASA Masterclass held by Juliette Bekkering and Michiel Riedijk at the Politecnico Milano aims at three different objectives:
• Study the relationship between Architecture and Nature;
• Explore the relation between design and representational means;
• Formulate and apply concepts regarding Architecture and Nature within the Milanese territory.
The Architecture of the City of Milan, Italy, has a long lasting history of developing Nature and Architecture in close proximity both on the level of the city as on the level on of the singel architectural intervention. Starting for instance with the seminal Ospedale Maggiore by Filarete, with small flows of water integrated in the basement for health and sanitary reasons, the Navigli canals system connecting the city to the larger Po-valley estuary, or the 1938 urban renewal scheme Milano Verde for the Fiera-Sempione area, till the contemporary Bosco Verticale building near Garibaldi station. The masterclass aims to reassess this tradition by formulating contemporary answers to urgent new challenges like the loss of biodiversity, drought or heat-islands effects. The masterclass aims to reformulate the relation between architecture and nature, not in a metaphorical way like Marc-Antoine Laugier (1713-1768) and others did, but in a tangible contemporary manner offering a symbiosis between Architecture and Nature.
