Call for Visiting Professor in “Architectural composition”

The Visiting professorship programme aims at strengthening the internationalization of the School of Architecture, Urban Planning and Construction Engineering and of the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies, by welcoming a foreign scholar for a semester term. The visiting professor will be in charge of lecturing one full course at the School for the period of her/his visiting position, developing autonomous research activity at the Department, joining seminars and academic venues.
The Visiting Professor will be in charge of lecturing the studio “Architectural composition” during the first semester of academic year 2019-2020 (16th September – 20th December 2019). Two dates for final examinations of attending students shall be fixed in January-February 2020.
The Studio
“Architectural Composition” is a studio offered at the first semester to the students enrolled in the second year of the Master of Science in Architecture & Urban Design.
The studio will be taught in English, it equals 6 ECTS credits and for a total of about 72 hours of teaching.
The studio addresses the construction of architectural form within a specific urban context, beginning from the discussion of the current state of the European city, with its character of randomness, fragmentation and stratification.
In the process of concretisation of the architectural form, the relation between formal logic and sustainable construction takes a central role.
The objective of the course is to discuss and experiment with categories, operational tools and strategies to describe and transform the urban context and to define an autonomous architectural form that is able to express meaning and identity of the place. A critical reference to a set of international case studies will be very appreciated.
The course is rewarded with a sum of 5.400€ gross (for income taxes paid in Italy, please consider that the average income tax in Italy equals about 46%. Other options may be verified).
The School
The Politecnico di Milano is one of the most outstanding Universities in Europe and ranked by the QS World University, Engineering and Technology 2011 among the leading universities in the world. Founded in 1863, it is the largest school of architecture, design and engineering in Italy (http://www.polimi.it).
The Master of Science in Architecture and Urban Design is a program taught in English at the School of Architecture, Urbanism and Construction Engineering (www.auic.polimi.it). The proportion of international students is relevant and produces a stimulating environment both for teaching and learning. The MSc Programme promotes a cultured and conscious architect profile, able to combine knowledge with knowing how to do, and therefore able to provide project design synthesis at different levels through the help of a wide range of knowledge and skills.
The programme objectives are:
- the ability to use knowledge to understand the phenomena and face the complex problems of architecture, city and territory;
- knowledge of disciplines that characterize their theoretical, scientific and methodological-operational aspects, in particular of Architectural Design and Composition, Construction Techniques and Technology of Architecture, Urban Planning, Landscape and Restoration.
- the ability to use this knowledge to identify, provide and solve, also in an innovative way, problems at different levels of intervention;
- the awareness of professional ethics. The courses are held at the central City Campus Leonardo in Milan.
Directed by Prof. Gabriele Pasqui, The Department of Architecture and Urban Studies (www.dastu.polimi.it) is now the second largest Department of Politecnico di Milano and the largest in the field of Architecture; furthermore, it is also an important research centre in Italy for urban and spatial planning issues, enjoying in a well-established international network of centres of excellence.
Submission of application
The visiting professorship program is open to highly qualified foreign scholars in the discipline of architecture and urban design. In order to state an interest in participating, the applicants should send the following documents (PDF format):

- A proposed programme for the course, specifying aims and contents, methodology, proposed readings and eventual side activities. Within the proposed programme, at least some teaching modules of flipped classroom and/or blended learning are required as a compulsory condition to be admitted to the selection.
