Beyond the 2026 winter olympic games: Valtellina perspectives
The PhD workshop deals with the topic of the Winter Olympic Games and with the contemporary issues in mountain territories. The core questions are: how could the winter Olympic games become a long-term opportunity for the mountain regions involved? Is it possible to provide a spatial place-based scenario for orienting sustainable development of this mountain region as a legacy of the Winter Olympic Games?
The workshop investigates the Milano Cortina 2026 Games case study in this framework, focusing on the Valtellina context through a “research by design” approach. The program is divided into two phases. During the first phase, the main issues concerning the risks and the opportunities of the 2026 Winter Olympic Games and the mountain territory are introduced and discussed, focusing on the current mountain conditions: fragilities, resources, accessibility, and economic perspective. The sessions include both lessons and discussion. In the second phase, the PhD students will focus on policies, plans and projects for the Valtellina Region, meeting and debating with institutional actors and stakeholders. Following this step, the one-week-long on-site design sessions in Valtellina conclude the WS. One session will be dedicated to meeting local authorities and proposing long-term scenarios for the Valtellina region. The kick-off meeting is scheduled for Thursday 27th of January 2022.Relatori: Andrea Arcidiacono, Silvia Restelli – Politecnico di Milano, Giacomo Menini – ASST Valtellina e Alto Lario, Sondalo – Politecnico di Milano, Zachary Jones, Davide Ponzini – Politecnico di Milano, Iacopo Mazzetti, Gloria Zavatta – Fondazione Milano Cortina
