This seminar explores the research-based conservation of Zhangyuan, Shanghai, focusing on original material analysis, digitalization, and project execution. It highlights the meticulous assessment and preservation of historic materials, and the integration of advanced digital tools like 3D scanning and virtual reality for accurate restoration and public engagement. The lecture also discusses the project’s strategies for balancing preservation with modern needs, illustrating how adaptive reuse and thoughtful interventions ensure the site’s sustainability.
Dr. Qian Du is an assistant researcher and lecturer at the Department of Architecture, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. She directs the M.Arch. (International) program and is the vice director of the International Research Centre for Architectural Heritage Conservation (IRCAHC). Dr. Du has contributed to heritage conservation projects such as the renewal of Zhangyuan and the World Heritage designation for Xinchang Ancient Town. She was also a core curation team member for the 2019 Shanghai Urban Space Art Season and the 2023 Venice Biennale’s Chinese Pavilion. Her research focuses on architectural conservation theory, technology, and cross-cultural heritage revitalization.
